Samuel E. Burgess
January 01, 1935 - July 19, 2003
Samuel Edward Burgess, son of the late John M. and Carrie V. McFadden Burgess, was born January 1, 1935 in New Zion, South Carolina. He departed this life on July 19, 2003 surrounded by loved ones at the Bon Secour Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, South Carolina. At an
Early age, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined St. John A.M.E. Church in the Workman Community of Kingstree, South Carolina. He relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1957 and then moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1958. Sam retired from the Baltimore City Department of Education in 1996 after serving over 20 years as Baltimore City employee.
He married the former Delores M. Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland, and out of this union two children were born, Samuel Jr. and David.
Sam fellowshipped regularly at Bethel A.M.E. Church of Baltimore, Maryland under the leadership
Of Dr. Frank M. Reid III, Senior Pastor. He enjoyed listening to Quartet singing groups, attending Gospel Programs, and being with the “fellas” at the Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore. He will be deeply missed.
Sam leaves to mourn his passion: his wife, Delores M. Burgess; two sons, Samuel E. Burgess, Jr. and David Eugene Burgess (married to the former Lynne James) of Baltimore, Maryland; five sisters, Pernell Wilson and Rosa Lee (Fred) McFadden of Turbeville, South Carolina; Ozella Burgess, Georgia Williams and Josephine McFadden of Paterson, New Jersey; one brother, John Eugene (Susie) Burgess of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; three sisters-in-law, Doris Johnson, Shirley Johnson and Catherine Meeks Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers-in-law, Earl Johnson and Herman Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland; two grandchildren, Ciara Burgess and David E. Burgess, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
